Job Description
A Healthcare Risk Manager typically reports to the Senior Healthcare Risk Manager or other appropriate administrator and is responsible for managing and integrating the risk management program into the quality and safety activities of assigned clinical areas. The HRM works in collaboration with the clinical team to ensure adherence to all federal regulations and clinical policies.
Risk management activities include but may not be limited to general knowledge of managing risk reporting on a day-to-day basis and analyzing risk management data including facilitation of Collaborative Risk Reviews using High Reliability methodology. The Healthcare Risk Manager is responsible for conducting risk management educational programs, determining areas of potential risk by tracking and trending safety reports, implementing data driven process improvement, assisting with grievance/complaint response, and under general supervision participates in formulating policy and/or organizational changes. The work involves handling sensitive patient, legal, and financial information, all of which directly affects the University’s public image and legal or financial status.
Responsibilities
Develop, manage and administer facility-wide systems for risk investigation and reduction. Assess operational and clinical risks across the assigned areas based on knowledge of national and state regulatory and accreditation standards and/or licensing requirements.
Maintain working knowledge of state, national and/or federal standards as required, reporting quality of care issues, adverse medical incidents, facility compliance related issues and any other requirement that directly impact the continued operations of the facility.
Ensures compliance with patient safety and risk management related standards by accrediting and regulatory entities and participants in clinical quality and safety efforts of the facility.
Assess, develop, implement, and maintain educational risk management programs for assigned personnel, leaders and Executive Team on identified issues and any other related activities as statutorily required.
Identify, investigate. and report on adverse medical incidents and facilitate the Collaborative Risk Review and Action process. Participate directly in the facility process for disclosure of unanticipated outcomes.
Works closely with the USF Self-insurance program and affiliate risk managers to identify events likely to lead to litigation.
Serves as a resource to clinical administration, other employees, and providers on risk management and ethical issues.
Monitors, analyses, and reports aggregated event report data to leadership and other relevant committees within the organization, with a focus on risk exposures for trends or patterns.
Close collaborations with the Patient Experience department to address patient grievances and identify risk measures that could improve patient satisfaction.
Collect, analyze, and share Healthcare Risk Management software data. Prepare graphs, reports, and data to support department goals and strategic plans, Track and analyze data, provide feedback, trending and problem solving. Prepare and present data as needed.
The HRM assists with review of medical records and acts as consultant to physicians, leadership, and team members on matters of Risk Management and Patient Safety.
Maintains confidentiality and ethical judgement. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This position requires a bachelor’s in nursing or other allied health professional and five years of experience in a healthcare setting with experience implementing major performance improvement processes.
- Legal, Licensure, & USF Requirements: Registered Nurse or other allied health professional Florida State license.
- Senate Bill 1310- The Florida Senate (https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2023/1310) is conditional upon meeting all employment eligibility requirements in the U.S.
- SB 1310: Substitution of Work Experience for Postsecondary Education Requirements
- A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
(a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
(b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree;
(c) Six years of direct experience for a master’s degree;
(d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
(e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
- Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
- Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.
CPHRM Certification is preferred; but must be obtained within (1) year of employment
Knowledge of patient safety principles of High Reliability Organizations and Collaborative Just Culture is preferred.
High Reliability Collaborative Jut Culture Program Certification as Fact Gatherer and Facilitator must be obtain within (1) of employment.
