Position Description:
University of Washington Positive Research (UWPR) conducts HIV research. Established in 1986 as the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and renovated with our new name in 2022, UWPR is part of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group, an international network of clinical research sites funded by NIH (U.S tax dollars) to perform research to improve and inform treatment for HIV and its complications, as well as working towards HIV remission/cure, and treatments for hepatitis B and C and other related infections. In addition to ACTG network studies, we also perform interventional and observational independent and industry studies focused on HIV and associated conditions. We are motivated by the desire to help better the health & well-being of people living with HIV. Over 2700 volunteers in more than 170 studies have helped us to answer questions about how HIV affects the body and to develop new treatments for HIV.
The Healthcare Specialist is an integral part of the UWPR research team and works closely with investigators, the multi-disciplinary staff members, collaborating laboratories, and referring health care providers to enroll and follow research participants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide study information to potential and enrolled research participants
Screen and consent potential research participants
Serve as study clinician for multiple clinical trials and/or research studies
Interview participants and document medical, medication, and relevant social and sexual histories and reviews of systems
Perform physical examinations, including anogenital examinations
Prescribe and administer study agents (oral and parenteral)
Monitor for effectiveness and adverse effects of research medications and study participation
Document and report adverse events in adherence with study requirements
Perform clinical procedures include venipuncture, collection of specimens such as Pap Smears, oral swabs, punch skin biopsies, and intensive pharmacokinetics samples. Facility with performing lumbar punctures is desired, but not required.
Start IVs as needed during research procedures
Organize and monitor results of other procedures, including ECGs, radiologic evaluations, leukaphereses, endoscopies, and inpatient stays at the UW Translational Research Unit
Maintain detailed documentation of participant visits and contacts for study protocols
Make diagnoses, order lab tests, provide treatment and maintain patient follow-up
Communicate with and collaborate with local primary care providers and their staff about research participants and potential participants
Participate in sponsor and local study initiation visits
Review draft protocols and develop the logistics for implementing studies
Design and implement study recruitment strategies.
Participate in bi-monthly staff meetings and study calls
Other duties as needed
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the State of Washington or a Physician’s Assistant (PA) in the State of Washington, or equivalent legal license/certification.
Must be eligible to receive hospital staff appointments for adjunct staff membership by the organized medical staff of the hospital under Medical Staff By-Laws for Hospital-based positions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual with Spanish
Required: previous phlebotomy experience
If no prior experience in such, ability to learn lumbar puncture, skin biopsy, and other minimally invasive procedures
Must be comfortable interacting with study participants/patients from a diverse range of social, cultural, and economic backgrounds and genders and sexual orientations
Required working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook
Attention to detail required
Training in, or ability to train in Human Subjects and Good Clinical Practice guidelines
Must be comfortable obtaining detailed social histories (including substance use, sexual and gynecologic histories)
Must be able to communicate clinical information in English to clinicians, support staff and patients.
Familiarity and comfort with electronic medical records
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
